"Interesting Facts about Cristiano Ronaldo"

Post on: January 2, 2020

The name Ronaldo is synonymous with soccer and is known to all and sundry. Likewise, the Ballon d’Or is the most enviable trophy for any football player. When the word is mentioned, the pronunciation oftentimes slips but it unmistakably points to soccer greats like Messi and Ronaldo.

Most commentators consider Ronaldo to be the all-time soccer great alongside titans like Pele, Maradona and Messi. His skill on the field knows no bounds as he continues to thrill fans and foes alike with his endeavours on and off the pitch.

We bring you some interesting facts about Ronaldo:

• He is a Portuguese and his full name is Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro. Former US president, Ronald Reagan was his dad’s favourite personality and that should explain how he got the name Ronaldo.

• He was a popular figure in school; however, he was expelled at the age of 14 for a belligerent act. He threw a chair at a teacher – for disrespecting him! Miraculously his mother transformed his vile behaviour into something positive. She egged him on to focus on the love of his life – soccer!

• His speed is unparalleled. And he defies the law of gravity and age when he jumps. In a recent match against Sampdoria, he jumped a staggering 2.56m! Speculation is rife that he would be a great basketball player should he choose to switch sports. He is agile and jumps higher than an average NBA player.

• Ronaldo is eternally grateful to his chum Fantrau who played alongside him as a boy. As the story goes (though unverifiable) — there was a scholarship at stake to be trained at a soccer academy in Lisbon. And the coach stipulated that whoever scored the most goal would be selected. Ronaldo and his buddy had scored a goal each as Fantrau dribbled adroitly past the opponents and could have scored and clinched the coveted scholarship. However, he passed the ball to Ronaldo who scored and went on to be a sensation. When asked to explain, Fantrau said without a tinge of regret that Ronaldo was a better player than him and deserved it more. When he became successful, Ronaldo repaid Fantrau with luxurious gifts and have been great friends.

• Ronaldo’s childhood hero was the legendary Luis Figo. Figo was considered one of the greatest players of his generation and held the record for a most capped player in Portugal until Ronaldo broke it.

• When he joined Manchester United at 18, he was given the most decorated jersey number “7” – made famous by Captain Marvel Bryan Robson and Eric Cantona. A lesser player would have rejected the number considering the pressure that comes alongside it. But Ronaldo was confident even at the age of eighteen to wear it.

• Ronaldo’s autobiography is entitled “Moments” and it showcases glimpses of his training regime and leisurely pursuits. It was written to be a conduit to get to know him better through the stories and beautiful pictures.

• Most people know that Ronaldo has a wax figure at Madame Tussauds but not many are aware that he also has a museum dedicated to his trophies. It is located in his hometown Madeira and named Museu CR7.

Cristiano Ronaldo has carved an indelible mark in the annals of soccer. However, just as fans who stand by him, there are detractors who despise him for being too cocky. Whether you love him or hate him, he has created waves with his extraordinary talents and a larger than life personality.
