Why visit the Philippines?
The Philippines is a fun place to visit. Tourists have fallen in love with the country as it offers a little bit of something for everyone. The beaches and islands are heavens on earth — the crystal clear water and white sandy beaches are indeed an allure… I can go on and on describing its charm.

The Filipinos are well known for their love for life and hospitality — most of them exude friendly vibes. Their penchant for life can be seen by their songs and dances in celebration of life. They make perfect ambassadors for their tourism slogan, “It’s more fun in the Philippines”.

Some Cultural Facts —
1. Western gestures and communication styles: English is comprehended by the locals. This is because of the influence of years of US military presence. English is predominantly spoken by the natives.

2. Respect: It is of utmost importance to the Filipinos. The country may be mired in many social inequalities but the locals believe that everyone must be treated with respect. Likewise, they accord it to others.

3. Greetings: Close female friends sometimes greet each other with a hug or kiss. And among the guys, it is a norm to hold hands or walk arm around a friend’s shoulder. But this is not acceptable between friends of the opposite gender.

4. Pai Kia (mafia) style?: It is not appropriate to put your hands on your hips during a conversation. This can be misconstrued as a challenge to the person you’re conversing with.

5. Personal Space: Be aware that sometimes it can be quite cramped in public places like subways and markets. Hence due to the limitation of space, some pushing and jostling can be expected (this isn’t deliberate but inevitable).

6. Decorum is appreciated: loud voices, drunkenness and obnoxious behaviour are frown upon especially in public places. It may not be a “Fine” city but that doesn’t mean you can let your hair down and misbehave.

7. Woman holding prominent position: This can as can be seen by the “woman power” in politics and businesses. They have a high standing in society which is such a welcome. This place is not for chauvinists who hold on to their preconceived and flawed notions on gender issues. A prejudice-free zone welcomes you!

8. Inequality of income: It is quite stark. In the midst of state of art buildings, expensive boutiques and fancy hotels, you can find “poverty” in its ramshackle community. And a short distance from the opulent business district separates the two of them.

Resiliency is in their DNA
We have seen the country being engulfed in natural disasters and upheavals. But their spirit can never be dampened. Every time they fall, they bounce back with much vigour and a smile on their faces.

The eye candy “Jeepneys” says it all – it is a place of exuberance and a happy go lucky feel. Be immersed in the beauty the country offers — the qualities of our Filipino brethren is admirable.
