"The Man Who Lost 39kg Without Breaking A Sweat"

Post on: March 7, 2018

Feroz stepped onto the weighing-machine… 119kg adorned the scales! He had almost gained back all his weight that was lost in the gym! Feroz had always been on the heavier side and maintaining weight, according to him, was for those with superhuman strength. “Mortals like me can’t stay away from snacking. It is impossible to resist my favourite syrupy Chendol,” he deadpanned.

He is an ardent soccer fan and a die-hard supporter of Manchester United — representing both his class and school during his younger days. He loved being a goalkeeper and continued to be between the posts for the “Singapore Society” team during his university days in the UK.

Being a reliable goalkeeper earned him the moniker “One That Always Saves The Day”, befitting his demeanour off the field too. The trusted custodian relished the role and he aptly puts in, “I would have the best view of the game and above all, running was never my forte.”

When he passed the age of thirty, life’s demands necessitated that the love of the game had to be put on the back burner. He had to juggle as a financial adviser and being a caregiver to his beloved mom. The road ahead was riddled with hardship but a deeply satisfying one. He rates the achievement as his very best — it is in times of showering such unconditional love that one finds his triumphs.

Life was moving at a hectic pace and his sedentary lifestyle was of no help either. It dawned on him that he will be reaching 50 soon and health was the greatest asset one can possess. Being a conscientious person who always advised people to be healthy, he reckoned he better walk the talk!

Feroz is a highly motivated person and his mantra — “You get what you focus on” saw him lose a whopping 39kg within a year… 119kg slashed to 80kg without breaking a sweat!

The Jolly Good Times had the opportunity to interview Feroz Bessir after he had blogged his success story. We are glad that we can showcase his story to our readers — an accomplishment by a guy-next-door whom we come across in our everyday life.

JGT: “What “secret programme” enabled you to slash so much weight in such a short timeframe?”
Feroz: “There is no secret — Intermittent Fasting and low-carb diet will help you lose weight. It melts your fat. It has been documented and researched extensively. People around the world are benefitting from it. Just that it’s not known by the masses here as yet.”

JGT: “Was your health at risk while fasting?”
Feroz: “On the contrary, my health was at risk by NOT fasting! If you look at it — the time we sleep, we are fasting too. The problem is we sleep shorter hours and eat longer hours these days. It is just adding a few hours in abstaining from food or skipping breakfast to equate the arithmetic.”

“It was never a risk for me, though it may be risky for others. Each individual has to know if she or he can adopt such a lifestyle with their own health condition. Fasting is an ancient practice prescribed by most religions and people have done it for centuries.”

JGT: “Was there any dietary supplements to add on to the programme?”
Feroz: “Himalayan salt … that’s all and no other supplement for me! I took the salt initially to offset dizziness. Thereafter, my body functioned well.

JGT: “How did you suppress your hunger pangs and cravings for food?”
Feroz: “Hunger comes in waves. I took Kopi-O Kosong (unsweetened black coffee) to suppress it. Once you’re off sugar, the cravings die off in time. I always focused on the gain rather than the pain.”

JGT: “What’s the difference between the previous Feroz & the new Feroz? (from Flab to Fab)”
Feroz: “I think the whole process has given me a sense of confidence and hope I can maintain my weight for years to come. I couldn’t exercise effortlessly when I was heavy. Now there is a good chance I can join my friends for a 5-a-side soccer match… My love for soccer beckons! And not forgetting — it cost me a fortune to fix up my wardrobe … which is a happy problem indeed!

JGT: “What would you say to someone who is obese and feels losing weight is something which is impossible?
Feroz: “People have achieved far more spectacular things than losing weight. There is nothing extraordinary about it as your body burns fats every day. It is just an effort on your part to retune your dietary habits to achieve more fat burning. I’ll conclude with a motivational saying by the great Nelson Mandela: ‘It always seems impossible until it’s done.”’

I wrapped up the interview as Feroz rose to give me a firm handshake. His robust grip almost crushed my fingers. I noticed how a guy who took a lackadaisical attitude towards his physique due to life’s challenges could transform himself into a macho image when he puts his heart and mind into it. I walked away feeling inspired by a friend whom I’ve known since my secondary school days and bearing witness to the adage, “if you think you can, you can!”
