"Cool Millennial Terms/ Phrases"

Post on: January 23, 2018

The internet is abuzz with millennial terms and phrases augmented by the pop culture. Youngsters use them all the time to the consternation of bewildered parents. Those above 30 are caught unawares. If it describes you, “Ai Zai” (take it easy) … if you can’t beat them, be in sync with the Millennials — who having been raised under the mantra, “follow your dream” and YOLO (You Only Live Once), is an exciting generation to watch.

Let’s face it — we not only have to learn new skills to stay relevant in the new economy. Learning and keeping abreast applies to every facet including popular lingo as well. We don’t want to be seen as a proverbial frog in a well, do we? Bring on the millennial terms …

1. Thirsty – it sounds simple. A feeling of a need to quench our thirst? Yes, but No! We do not mean that. Rather, it means wanting something badly, “desperate”. A trainer-friend related his true-life story — he went for a tea-dance where he approached every girl for a dance … one after another, they rejected him. Undeterred, he persisted till the 30th girl relented (the lady ended up as his wife!). I commended him for his unflinching confidence. The millennials will simply call him “Thirsty”.

2.Slay – It doesn’t mean you slaughter somebody. On the contrary, you did something so well that people tell you it was simply awesome! “She’s not Beyonce; she’s Beyon-SLAY!”

3. On Fleek – It means on point, meaning cool and trendy; something is just perfect. “Wow, your eyebrow is ON FLEEK today”. I realise the millennials take pride in having good eyebrows.

4. Dead- You use it when something is so hilarious; when a “HaHa” or “LOL” doesn’t correctly depict the feeling. In such an instance, you got to use this. “I am DEAD; the joke is too much”

5. Bae – “Before Anyone Else” — Refers to your boyfriend /girlfriend or significant other.

6. Salty – Can be used to describe someone who is in a bad mood or angry. It is a very common word used by the millennials. “She is still feeling SALTY just because she wasn’t invited to the party”.

7. No Chill – This term describes someone who is overly excited and overreacts. Such a person has lost the ability to act in a rational manner.

8. Squad – According to the dictionary, it refers to a small number of soldiers/ police officers, amongst others. But to a millennial, it’s pointing to who you hang out with. It is the word you use to caption your Instagram photos of you and your close friends.

9. Gucci – It means something cool and of high quality or flashy. “Your new Maserati GranTurismo sports car is so GUCCI”.

10. Throw shade – To show disapproval; give side eye; talk trash behind one’s back. “I cannot concentrate on my drawing as the other clique is THROWING SHADE”.

Jump on the bandwagon and have fun with these words. You can start by using them on your nephews/nieces and be ON FLEEK … The Jolly Good Times hopes you had fun with the millennial terms. Share it with your kakis — invite them to like us on Facebook.
