Post on: April 26, 2019

His name is Dwayne Douglas Johnson, more commonly known as The Rock. He epitomises a story of someone who made it with an indomitable spirit and a steely determination. I fondly remember watching him wrestle at WWF (World Wrestling Federation) with a larger than life personality.

The world knows him as a football player, wrestler, entertainer, actor, author and producer. He is a person who wears many hats and never fails to enthral. We bring you 10 facts about the man with the Midas touch…

1. Runs in the family – Dwayne comes from a family of wrestlers. His granddad was a famous wrestler, Peter Maivia with the moniker, the “Flying Hawaiian”. His dad was crowd favourite, Rocky Johnson while Dwayne thrilled fans with his persona, The Rock.

2. Wrestling was his springboard for success, a career that catapulted him with fame and adulation. His stellar resume includes a two-time Intercontinental Champion, a five-time tag team champion, and a ten-time world champion. He is also a Royal Rumble match winner and a Triple Crown champion.

3. To be known by his given name – After his retirement from wrestling, Dwayne gave an interview that he does not want to be known as the “The Rock”. He wanted to put his wrestling identity behind him and be known as the actor with his given name.

4. Childhood Days – As a high school student, he cut an intimidating figure with his physique of 6”4” and 225 pounds. His school mates were apprehensive of him. They thought he was an undercover police officer!

5. Records – His name was etched into the Guinness World Records in 2007 for being the highest paid actor in a debut movie. He earned a whopping $5.5 million in his maiden movie, The Mummy Returns in 2007.

6. As a writer — In 2000, Dwayne made forays into the literary world by co-authoring his biography, “The Rock Says”. It was well received – making its way into the New York Times Best Sellers List as the number one best seller for several weeks.

7. Publicity stunt — Dwayne’s famous dialogue during his wrestling days was: “If You Smell What the Rock Is Cooking.” It was his way of referring to himself as the 3rd person. It basically means “do you know what’s on my mind?”– a catchphrase which struck a chord with the masses.

8. Stunts — Like most movie stars, he uses a stunt double for his dangerous feats. However, many people are unaware that the coveted role goes to his cousin, Tanoai Reed.

9. Beefcake with brains – he graduated with a Bachelor degree in Criminology and physiology from the University of Miami in 1995. I wonder if he would have been a criminologist if not for the lure of the entertainment world.

10. College sweetheart — He was married to Dany Garcia where he met while pursuing his degree. They have an 18-year-old daughter, Simone Alexandra. Although he has split with his wife, it was done amicably and they have remained best of friends.

Dwayne has proven that one can “Reach for the Stars” with hard work and dedication. He has been consistently ranked as the world’s highest paid actor. It’s no surprise that the prestigious Time Magazine named him as one of the 100 most influential people in the world not once but twice in 2016 and 2019.
