"The King And The Macaw"
Post on: May 31, 2018
It is always heartwarming to read motivating stories which uplift us. We may not be able to vouch for the story’s authenticity. But it is not important. What matters is that they capture our hearts, set us thinking and create a desire within us to act positively. A lesson can be learnt from the success or misfortune the story brings…
Once there lived a king who was presented two Macaws by a neighbouring kingdom. The king was astounded by the beauty of the bird — he had never seen anything like this before… the splendour transcended his imagination.
It dawned upon him that with such a prized catch, it would be a pity if they were not honed to perfection. So he summoned a bird trainer to train the macaws. The macaws were allotted a spot in the lush garden. From his palatial windows, he could see the macaws in its regality which brought him pride and joy.
However, one day the trainer approached the king and reported that while one of the macaws flew majestically and adhered to his commands, the other did not budge. It had remained on the branch since the day it arrived!
The king was distraught and summoned all the trainers and healers from the neighbouring kingdom to make his macaw fly. He even asked the advisors and noblemen to find a solution… but it was all in vain. The macaw refused to move an inch no matter how hard it was enticed!
When all endeavours were exhausted, the king thought perhaps someone who was familiar with natural habitat may be able to coax the macaw. So the king summoned a farmer from the countryside in the hope that he understands the mannerism of the macaw.
The next morning, the king was ecstatic to see both the macaws flying majestically above the palatial garden. The king was dumbfounded as the farmer did it so effortlessly when renowned trainers and courtiers were at their wit’s end!
The king summoned the farmer and asked, “What was the magic wand that made the macaw fly?” In his humility and respectful stance, he replied, “There was nothing spectacular, your majesty. I simply cut the branch where the macaw was firmly rooted to.”
Moral of the story: All of us have talents to be a success. However, we are hesitant to move beyond the familiar to attain greater accomplishments. We steadfastly cling on to what is familiar. We prefer to remain where we are and feel secure with the present “cosy” environment. To be a success, we must free ourselves and step out of our comfort zone — challenge ourselves to reach greater heights of success.
