"Lesson From The Shark and Its Bait"

Post on: October 7, 2019

A researcher wanted to ascertain certain facts. So, he conducted an experiment where he put a shark into a huge tank. He followed this step by adding various species of fishes into the tank as its bait.

The ferocious shark attacked the fishes without batting an eyelid and had a wholesome meal. The researcher then placed a fibreglass in the middle of the tank. It segregated the tank into two. With this, the shark was confined to one side of the tank. He then released more fishes on the other side of the tank.

Immediately the shark pounced towards the fishes but was hit by the partition — the fibreglass stood firm despite the incessant pounding by the shark.

The shark relentlessly tried to attack the fishes but it was thwarted by the partition. The impediment emboldened it further and it attempted with a renewed sense of vigour; however, its every endeavour proved futile! It soon gave up altogether.

This was the time the researcher was waiting for – he meticulously took out the partition. However, the shark did not budge. It did not attack the fishes although the researcher had taken it out. The shark could still visualise the imaginary barrier which had prevented it from devouring the fishes in its earlier attempts. The barrier continued to act as a deterrent although it was no longer there!

The researcher proved a valid point through this experiment. Like the shark in the experiment, most people tend to give up after one or two setbacks. We tend to gravitate towards the notion that we will fail since we have failed in the past. Like the shark, we carry with us this ‘imaginary barrier’ that limits our progress in life.

Bear in mind that in every defeat there lies a seed of a greater victory. The world may tell you that what you’re embarking on would end up a failure and you’re simply fighting a losing battle. This should not act as a dampener – instead, it should motivate you to work hard and prove them wrong!

The great Napoleon Hill puts it so succinctly, “Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit.”
