"Can You Sleep When The Wind Blows"

Post on: July 29, 2019

Years ago, there was a farmer, Jack who owned a land along the coastal region of a village. He had difficulty finding workers as nobody wanted to work on a farm where the storms were prevalent. It was a well-known fact that the storms would wreak havoc – causing damage to the barns and livestock.

During the interview, the applicants would show their apprehension when being briefed in detail of what the job entails. Unsurprisingly, most rejected the offer and those who were hired left after experiencing the storm.

One day, a middle-aged man who did not possess the disposition of a farm helper approached Jack for work. Jack asked, “Will you be prepared to face the storm?”

“I can sleep when the wind blows” the man replied.

Jack was puzzled by such an answer. Jack did not think the man had the prerequisites nor the attitude with such a confounding reply; nevertheless, he hired the man as nobody was willing to work on his farm.

However, to Jack’s astonishment, the man was a great help. Day and night, he laboured laboriously. Jack was satisfied with the work done and was pleased with his performance. “Life is full of surprises – thank goodness I did not reject him,” Jack thought to himself.

Just when all was going well, the wind howled vociferously one night. A big storm was impending. Jack was startled by the sound and rushed to the man’s room which was near the haystack. Jack was flabbergasted to find him in deep slumber. Jack shook him and yelled, “Quickly get up – go and bind everything before they get blown away.”

But the man replied, “Remember what I told you during the interview? I can sleep when the wind blows.”
Jack was stumped with the reply and decided that’s the end of the man. “I have to fire him first thing in the morning,” he made up his mind and stomped out.

Jack quickly rushed out to tie up everything and salvage whatever he could. But he could not believe his eyes!
The haystack was secured with canvases. The goats were in the barn and chickens were secured in their coop and all the shutters were shut. With the man’s proactive approach, everything was secured — nothing could be blown away.

Furthermore, there was food and water for everyone to weather the difficult period ahead.
The man’s oft remarked phrase began to sink in. Slowly, Jack realised what the man had meant by: “I can sleep when the wind blows.”

When a person is ready for whatever eventualities that might befall, he has nothing to fear. When the world is crumbling around you and when uncertainty looms ahead, the best tactic is to be prepared and stay calm.
Are you prepared to sleep when the wind blows?
